What I’m Working On

Strings Without Borders is a musical portrait of guitarist Pierre Bensusan. At just 17, the Frenchman won the Grand Prix du Disque at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival. 20,000 People Could Come To A Screening?

Medic Alfred Rascon is carried off the battlefield in Vietnam, shortly after the action that would earn him The Medal of Honor.

I’ve had some great screenings during my career. But 20,000 people showing up? Even half that would be astonishing. Yet, those are the numbers being cited for a FREE screening of Medal of Honor in Chicago on August 13th at Grant Park.

Yes, that’s where Barak Obama gave his acceptance speech upon being elected president.

Every Tuesday throughout the summer, up to 20,000 Chicagoans watch classic films in Grant Park. They bring blankets, chairs and picnics. Our screening is on Thursday evening. Two Medal of Honor recipients will be there too. We’ll all be available before the film to talk.

Medal of Honor premiered on PBS last November to great acclaim:

The New York Post wrote, “This special is …so awe-inspiring …that, if I could, I would award it four Medals of Honor. It is that good and that honest. …Do yourself a favor. Don’t miss it.” The Wall Street Journal said the film is, “That rare thing – a film shot through with the most emotional of themes that succeeds in rendering portraits of unimaginable heroism with discipline and dignity.” And, MSNBC declared, “Yes, there’s a lot of junk on TV. But the medium can also rise to the occasion quite beautifully. …The richly drawn stories will stay with you for a long time after you turn off the set.”

The Medal of Honor is the highest medal for valor that our nation bestows. The film traces the history medal from the war in Iraq back to the Civil War, when it was created. Most of the stories are inconceivable and would be rejected if submitted to Hollywood. Only one woman has ever received it. You can see the trailer and clips right here on the website, just click on films.

So, tell your Chicago friends to come.

The film kicks off the Medal of Honor Society annual meeting, which will be held in Chicago, September 15-19.
