In Search of Israeli Cuisine

Joan Nathan, the doyenne of Jewish cooking, travels all over Israel with a group of passionate foodies.

(To be produced in 2012)

Israel is just 62 years old. Aharoni, a famous TV food show host, tells us that in the early days it was considered inappropriate to think about good food. There were more important things to do. “I was ashamed of my roots,” he says. Well, times have changed. There are fine restaurants all over the country, 150 boutique wineries and just as many cheese makers. Are they any good? Chefs are traveling the world, returning and opening restaurants. Are they creating their own styles or copying French, Italian and American cuisines?

In Search of Israeli Cuisine (new working title), a feature length, cinema verité documentary, will find out. These sample scenes were made on a research trip to Israel last March. Accompanying Joan Nathan were food journalists Marc Furstenberg, Leah Koenig, Beverly Stephen and Thomas Head. Major assistance for the trip was given by the America-Israel Friendship League.

The filmmakers will return to Israel in 2012 with Joan Nathan and a new group of serious foodies to make a comprehensive film. They will dig deep into the food culture crisscrossing the country, going to kitchens, restaurants, farms, wineries, in search of true Israeli cuisine.
