It was performed by one of the pre-eminent surgeons<br \/>in the field, Dr. Marci Bowers, who also happens to be a trans woman. Marci described the process in real time on camera.<br \/>Becoming Jamie: Shock and Joy<\/em>, will go as deep and be as dramatic, poignant, revelatory, and meaningful as any film being created.<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_4944\" align=\"alignleft\" width=\"340\"]<img class=\" wp-image-4944\" src=\"http:\/\/www.florentinefilms.com\/sherman\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DSC00051-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Jamie and Dr. Marci Bowers, surgeon\" width=\"340\" height=\"255\" \/> Jamie and Dr. Marci Bowers, surgeon. Confirmation surgery is tomorrow.[\/caption]<p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Jamie is a brilliant television engineer: she set up the original Oxygen Media and Al Gore\u2019s Current TV.<br \/>She\u2019s also a photographer \u2013 fetish and fashion, 8x10\u201d wet plate \u2013 a filmmaker, a builder, and former<br \/>college professor.<\/p><p>Our film will combine Jamie\u2019s intimate video diaries and my filming, drawing on her extensive collection<br \/>of family films and photographs. She is dynamic, funny, and not afraid to talk about her most intimate<br \/>and heart wrenching issues. Jamie was married for thirty years, is since divorced, and has two grown daughters.<br \/>Tina, who is in her twenties, is getting married this August. She and her fianc\u00e9 Nick live with Jamie<br \/>in a Boston suburb.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_4947\" align=\"alignleft\" width=\"241\"]<img class=\"wp-image-4947\" src=\"http:\/\/www.florentinefilms.com\/sherman\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/BillArnoldphoto1973-168x300.png\" alt=\"Halloween, 1973\" width=\"241\" height=\"430\" \/> Halloween, 1973[\/caption]<p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>While Jamie did not realize she was trans until recently, she tells us that looking back<br \/>there were many signs.\u00a0For example, she describes being terribly upset when <em>his<\/em> tween<br \/>body began to experience\u00a0puberty. Not knowing why,\u00a0he stole Novocain from his<br \/>pediatrician father and repeatedly\u00a0injected his testicles, resulting in an emergency removal of one.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Other scenes we\u2019ve already filmed:<\/p><ul><li>\u201cI\u2019ve been a whole woman for fifty-five days now, and how about this:\u00a0I\u2019ve just had my first orgasm!\u201d Jamie pumps her fist looking into the camera. \u201cI don\u2019t know who invented the vibrator, but thank you and thank you!\u201d<\/li><li>Playing <em>Second Life<\/em>, the online virtual game, Jamie tells us she originally created a male avatar but after just three hours switched to a woman he named Jami Luvvi. Late one night, two years later, he looked at the screen and realized Jami was her: a tall, blue-eyed blonde, sexy woman. From that moment on he identified as a woman.<\/li><li>At the prep-op and again during the surgery Dr. Bowers informs viewers that male and female sexual organs \u201care more similar than different.\u201d She tells us, \u201cI'm not going to cut off Jamie\u2019s dick\u201d and describes how the head of the penis becomes the clitoris, that after surgery trans people can have normal sex lives and experience orgasm. This has come as a complete shock to <u>every<\/u> cis person I\u2019ve talked to. (Cisgender is what the trans community calls non-trans people.) It\u2019s also the first question people want to ask but are too afraid. How the surgery is accomplished \u2013 male to female and female to male \u2013 will be illustrated with animation.<\/li><\/ul><p><img class=\" wp-image-4949 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.florentinefilms.com\/sherman\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jamie-daughter-147x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"451\" \/><\/p><ul><li>\u00a0<\/li><li>Jamie drives to Boston in October to have her boob enlargement procedure. Leaving her house, she lifts her shirt to reveal her \u201chappy, perky before.\u201d Our camera is there as she checks in and leaves to have the procedure.<\/li><li>Recording while driving to an electrology session, Jamie tells us she\u2019s suffered through about 80 hours with many more to go. We watch as one follicle after another is lasered, then plucked, Jamie wincing at each pull. \u201cFeels like a bee sting.\u201d Afterwards she looks like she\u2019s been beaten up.<\/li><li>In the pre-op room, we see Jamie\u2019s bald head for the first time. She usually wears a bandana, sometimes a wig. She talks about how sensitive she is about her appearance, an attitude she tells us that\u2019s widely shared in the trans community. Jamie then lists all the other surgeries she plans: hair implants, Adam\u2019s Apple, vocal chords, tummy tuck, facial reconstruction\u2026 She shares that she\u2019s starting a foundation to help trans people with the high cost of these surgeries.<\/li><li>A scene cuts quickly among a half dozen nurses who come to check Jamie in for surgery. When it\u2019s pointed out that her name is spelled wrong on the pre-op board. The process is repeated.<\/li><li>Returning home to Massachusetts after the confirmation surgery, many repressed memories are surfacing: Jamie realized the intense fetish acts and photography he did with his wife, including self-mutilation, was directly linked to <em>not<\/em> knowing he was actually a woman.<\/li><li>Two weeks after her surgery, Jamie and her close friend Carol, a senior materials engineer at DuPont, and also a trans woman, are falling for each other. The only problem is Carol has been looking for a traditional male-female relationship; she\u2019s out at work but not on the social scene. She travels all over the world for business and is afraid of being arrested in a country such as Dubai, where being trans is illegal.<\/li><li>A tearful and angry Jamie tells us she\u2019s suffering from fistula, a leaking bladder, and has been incontinent since the surgery. A urologist inserted a catheter, \u201cnot what exactly making me feel attractive, and I haven\u2019t been sleeping either, so I look like shit.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><u>Filming <\/u>Continues: New scenes will follow Jamie out in the world. Some will be intense, others light and informative:<\/p><ul><li>She shops for clothes at TJ Max with stylist Cynthia Gardner, who dressed Katie Couric and James Taylor.<\/li><li>At drinks with a group of women, she gets tips on how to walk and be in the world as a woman. Viewers are not told who is trans and who is cis.<\/li><li>At Carol\u2019s apartment, Jamie installs new kitchen cabinets. Jamie goes to a job interview at a prestigious prep school.<\/li><li>The film ends at Tina and Nick\u2019s wedding on Cape Cod in August. Jamie, dressed to the nines, walks her daughter down the aisle.<\/li><\/ul><p><u>Teaser<\/u>: We have begun editing sample scenes while filming continues.
