Roger Sherman’s In Search of Israeli Cuisine is a masterpiece. After seeing it, I promptly planned my first ever trip to Israel. Equal parts culinary journey and ancestral archaeology, the film opens a fresh way to fathom a complex country and its people – whose traditions and ways can be more fully understood when you appreciate how its diverse population eats.”
Danny Meyer, restaurateur
I was surprised to find myself choked up before the opening credits.”
Michael Floreak, Boston Globe
Sherman and Solomonov buoyantly capture the art and joy of preparing and savoring Israel’s raft of gastronomic choices, largely drawn from local ingredients…. The film, which often invokes a better Food Network offering, also covers how the Israeli-Palestinian conflict divide can, during during more fractious times, affect a restaurant’s patronage.”
Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times
Offers fascinating insights into a little-understood country, using the culinary prism to illuminate a complex, still-young culture.”
Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter
You don’t have to be a foodie to find Roger Sherman’s documentaryIn Search of Israeli Cuisine. [It’s] unexpectedly interesting…. An enjoyable film about Israeli food that touches on history, culture and politics.”
Simi Horowitz, Film Journal International
A feast for the eyes.”
MovieMaker magazine
A veritable model of intelligent, entertaining filmmaking about food.”
James van Maanen, Trust Movies
A truly fascinating and enlightening journey for anyone interested in the rich history, culture.”
Mark Saldana, True View Reviews
The film had yours truly, a notorious non-foodie wanting to schlep into Manhattan where there might be a chance that I could find some of the food mentioned in the film…. It is an excellent long form look at a country and it’s food. I say this because there is a tendency for many food films to be simply the equivalent of a couple of TV show episodes stitched together. That is not the case here. Solomonov and director Roger Sherman take the feature film form and really go to town to really explore a country and it’s food.”
